Palatines to America - German Genealogy Society

New York Chapter

June 17 - 19, 2010 New York Chapter - Palam National Conference 2010 at the Holiday Inn, Fishkill, NY across the Hudson River from the site of the first Palatine settlers to be given land in the Colony, in present day Newburgh. Our main speaker will be Philip Otterness, the author of the book, Becoming German, the 1709 Palatine Migration to New York.

In 1983 a gathering of 20 persons met in Canajoharie, NY to establish the New York Chapter of Palatines to America. The Charter for the NY Chapter was presented to the first president, George Tillapaugh, in 1984 by The National Society President, Robert Rudy. The first official meeting of the NY Chapter was held on May 5, 1984.

By tradition the two meetings per year for the Chapter are held the first Saturday in May in the Mohawk Valley region and on the first Saturday of October in the Hudson Valley region. These two locales represent the earliest settlements of the 1710 Palatine immigrants and their descendents in the state. Historical and genealogical information is featured at each program meeting, along with a site visit to complement the program when possible. In addition, a short business meeting is part of the day's program.

The Chapter Bylaws, dues and membership procedures are under the guidance of the National Society based in Columbus, OH. The Chapter has proudly produced a newsletter, Yorker Palatine, usually four times a year since its inception. The Chapter maintains a publication that includes the surnames of ancestral interest as submitted by the members. Through paid membership, the two publications of the National Society are also received by the NY members.

The New York Chapter has hosted three national conferences designed for the membership of all the state chapters belonging to Pal-Am. The June 2004 conference in Albany marked the 20th Anniversary of the New York Chapter; earlier conferences sponsored were in 1991 at Cobleskill and in 1998 at Kingston. Members are currently planning the 300th Anniversary of the 1710 Palatine Immigrants that settled at East Camp and West Camp near the Hudson River. This conference will be 17th through the 19th June 2010, in Fishkill, NY.
