October 9, 2021 New York Fall Meeting in Buffalo, New York

The meeting will be held at the historic and beautiful Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site (641 Delaware Ave).

Our speakers:

  1. Joe Lieby will present on “How  attitudes toward our German ancestors changed during the Civil War and beyond”
  2. Christopher White will use our presence at Roosevelt site to help us understand how America (and its politicians) reacted to the presence of and treated German Americans during World War

After a lunch break we will reconvene at the nearby (3 ½ miles) Concordia Cemetery (438 Walden Ave.) where we will participate in a ceremony honoring Capt. Michael Wiedrich, whose Wiedrich’s Battery helped the Union keep the high ground at Gettysburg.

Roosevelt site: On the 5th of September 1905 President McKinley was shot at the Pan-American Exposition and died on the 14th.  Vice President Roosevelt who was in the nearby Adirondacks was rushed to Buffalo and was inaugurated here at the home of his friend Ansley Wilcox.

Concordia Cemetery was originally founded for the burial of the German immigrants who moved to Buffalo in the early 19th century. It is a National Historic site, containing about 150 civil war veterans and known for its beautiful Victorian era carvings.

The registration fee will be $15. The portion of the meeting held at the Roosevelt site will be hybrid with members able to attend in person or via Zoom.  Questions to
