INTERNATIONAL GERMAN GENEALOGY PARTNERSHIP

The IGGP (International German Genealogy Partnership) was founded in 2015 by genealogy society leaders in the United States and Germany. The founding partners were Germanic Genealogy Society, Pommern Regional Group of MN, and Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft genealogischer Verbände (DAGV). Although not one of the three charter partners of what was initially named the German American Genealogy Partnership (until November 2016), Palatines to America did participate in the initial online meeting on May 28, 2015 with fourteen individuals from the United States, Germany, and Poland.

The partnership holds twelve monthly conference calls a year―six in English and six in German―with representatives of partner societies. Palatines to America’s national partner representatives to IGGP are Kent Robinson and Garry Finkell. Each of our state chapters is also eligible to have a representative.

On June 25, 2015, the Palatines to America national board of directors passed a motion to join the partnership thinking it would create new and valuable relationships in the world of German genealogical research that could benefit our society and its members.

The motto of the partnership is “Uniting German Genealogy Researchers Worldwide.”

The partnership holds a biennial conference featuring a wide range of topics relative to German genealogy research methodology and dealing with numerous locations both in Germany and outside its current-day borders.

IGGP conferences have been in:

  • 2017 - Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • 2019 - Sacramento, California
  • 2021 - Virtual (due to COVID)
  • 2023 - Fort Wayne, Indiana

Since then IGGP has grown tremendously and expanded far beyond its initial geographic boundary. As of early 2023 there are fifty-seven partner societies on five continents―Europe, North America, Australia, South America, and Africa. Counting the seventy-three member associations that are a part of DAGV in Germany, there are over one hundred twenty-five society partners.

The mission of IGGP is to facilitate German genealogy research globally as the internationally recognized federation of German genealogy organizations.

Two benefits of being in the partnership are (1) developing relationships with representatives of other partner societies that can prove beneficial in the sharing of research information and (2) increased publicity about individual partners and their events. This relationship enables Palatines to America members enhance their research by providing access to IGGP partners who are located throughout the world.

For further information about the partnership, the bimonthly newsletter, Partner Zeitung, and a calendar of events by partner societies, please refer regularly to the homepage of IGGP at https://iggp.org/. There is no cost to access this information to members of Palatines to America or other partner societies.
